Parking issues in Cambridge: Spring 2022 engagement

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) would like to hear your thoughts on the location and nature of on-street parking issues currently affecting road users in Cambridge. The feedback we receive will help us to develop a new plan for further on-street parking controls, including possible residents’ parking schemes, and will help us to set priorities for delivering them.

This initial period of public engagement will last for four weeks and will close at midday on Monday 21 March 2022. Further public consultation would take place on specific proposals at a later date.

The GCP is looking for ways to solve wider parking issues across the city as well as addressing the need for further residents’ parking schemes. Issues could be tackled through the introduction of area-wide parking controls to help avoid displacing parking to neighbouring streets. We aim to build on earlier work undertaken by Cambridgeshire County Council to identify areas for further residents’ parking schemes.

Background and next steps

Following a period where the introduction of new residents’ parking schemes in Cambridge was paused, Cambridgeshire County Council has asked the GCP to carry out the delivery of further residents’ parking schemes as part of its wider City Access programme.

This work forms part of an integrated parking strategy that the GCP is developing with Cambridgeshire County Council and Cambridge City Council. This will cover both on- and off-street parking to ensure a joined-up approach in the way we provide and operate parking across the city. Please note, by off-street we mean public car parks managed or operated by the County or City Council and local parking standards when assessing planning applications.

What we would like you to tell us

The kind of on-street parking issues and problems we would like to hear about include:

  • where it causes delays and obstruction or affects the safety of road users
  • local residents having difficulty finding on-street parking
  • commuter parking affecting local parking needs
  • where there is a lack of cycle parking
  • where the provision of car club spaces could help reduce on-street parking
  • lack of blue badge parking spaces
  • where parking for access to public buildings and services/local shops is inadequate
  • where loading/unloading bays are required

However, there may be other parking issues in your area that you may wish to comment on.

Previous work on possible permit schemes

We are also interested in feedback on possible scheme boundaries. The County Council has previously looked at some parts of the city and a map illustrating indicative areas can be found here. Not all parts of the city have indicative areas but these will be identified as part of the next phase of work and we welcome feedback on possible boundaries.

How to have your say

Below this section, in the tab marked MAP, is a link to an interactive map where you can add a pin and leave a comment based on the above suggestions relating to parking. You will see that there are different categories of pin depending on the type of comment you are leaving.

Please note: comments that are left are visible to all map users.

The mapped existing residents' parking zone boundaries are indicative only and should not be used as reference for permit eligibility. Details of these zones, and the permit application process, can be found on the Cambridgeshire County Council website.

If you are unable to access the map, you can email us at consultations@greatercambridge.org.uk(External link) or call us on 01223 699906 to leave feedback.
